I have been the editor of a number of novels, memoirs and poetry books. With The Perilous Journey of Gavin the Great I can honestly say that I would not suggest the addition or deletion of a single word, let alone a paragraph or chapter.

In The Perilous Journey of Gavin the Great  Illustrated Edition, Gutteridge has written a timely tale that celebrates the power of courage, perseverance, family, friendship, and camaraderie. The pacing is measured, and the worldbuilding is cleverly wrought and inviting. Sensible and tenacious, Gavin is wholly likable, and so are his companion creatures. Bolstered by A. T. Balsara’s black-and-white illustrations, this delightful fantasy truly stands out. A must-have for libraries shelves.

The Perilous Journey of Gavin the Great, is a fable, a legend, an epic journey of self-discovery, coming of age, and basic survival of the fittest. The plot begins with the flood. The characters, all animals, are introduced as their plight becomes evident, with the main animal character, Gavin the raccoon, leading them. The language is superb in so many ways – it lures the reader into the comfort of listening and reveling in the story itself. The author is definitely a poet and, like other poets who venture beyond their poetic command of the English language, like Michael Ondaatje, Gutteridge’s prose reads like poetry, full of metaphors and similes, allusions and irony – just fascinatingly beautiful language. Although the story can be dark at times, it’s also riveting, a legend of both biblical and epic proportions. Written for a Middle-Grade audience, this story will have readers of all ages engrossed to the very end.
