Into the Milkweed Meadow by Don Gutteridge is a collection of original poetry revolving around the poet’s experiences with life, love, family, and loss. The volume of Gutteridge’s work within the book numbers in the dozens with free verse formatting providing the perfect platform for a prolific and talented writer. The poems range from the piece Masculine, where a son describes the pressure from a father to prove his machismo by hunting, to Heart, an ode to moments of true connection that burn for a lifetime, and on to Nook, a heart-breaking composition to the pain of a young death and the dreams of a bright future that die with them. Gutteridge’s eloquent style captures the deeply contemplative and profoundly human transition of life into a written art.
I feel like Don Gutteridge has given me unrestricted access to the recesses of his heart, a privilege I accept with gratitude as I reflect on his work in Into the Milkweed Meadow. Poetry is often difficult to review because it is so very subjective and not being able to click with the highs and lows an author courageously puts out into the world carries the risk of devaluing their experiences when it is only the verses that feed the disconnect. This is not and never was the case with Gutteridge whose stanzas practically sing. My favorite poem is “Comfort” where Gutteridge describes the physical loss of his wife who passed on before him, reminiscing on her body and how it gave way to the perfect, libidinous manifestations of their love. Overall, this is an amazing anthology that I would give a whole bucket of stars to if I could.
