Bruce Kaufman’s sixth collection is a wonderful guidebook through the “ever-rolling everything.” Here we have the poet’s trademark cosmic observations about “the pulse / of what’s within” but also a grateful acceptance of the past, the present, and “the breath / enough.” ever-crossings is a book that has a pulse and breath and an open heart, and reminds us why we have them too.

It is a rare gift to read a book that is written with gentle humility and aching truth. In ever-crossings, poet Bruce Kauffman invites readers into his confidence, sharing intimate moments on themes of solitude, wonder, and perseverance. For his muse, Kauffman declares he will “wait in silence for as long as it takes” and will “…weather storms within,” confessing: “having lived so long / alone / in this place / i fear i am losing language.” Yet even here, Kauffman does not despair. On writing poetry, Kauffman describes poems being found – “on the feathered tail of a dove…and “on the backs of wild horses and ponies.” Anchored in everyday experiences, ever-crossings is a tender and compelling read.

A good introduction to Bruce Kauffman’s beautiful new book, ever-crossings, is its own conclusion: “we are told that somewhere / … / is a lake… / where we can cleanse it all / …. / turn ash back into earth / … / the spirits / the voices/ the poets / tell me / it is there / so / i must / believe”. The marrow of the book lies in the simplest, deepest things and experiences, vividly described and faithfully welcomed. There are excellent poems in the meditative lyric style of Kauffman’s earlier book, still arriving, but in ever-crossings the story poems are especially striking. The still depths of life that accompany us everywhere, even in pain and especially in mystery, shine forth in narratives like “watching”, “moon”, “moving into”, “waiting for anything”, “for father again”, “that unknown”, and the enigmatic, warm-hearted “Questions”. ever-crossings is an enchantingly readable combination of song, storytelling, memory, and loving attention. It is breath formed into poetry in that “instant / before / wonder begins”.
