The book contains seven distinct yet cohesive sections. As Christou explains in his Introduction, the book is “… a walk through the hours, a cycle shaped by monks for centuries. / … it is marked by the way the light breaks and recedes, by the stillness that settles at midnight…”
In a mutuality of existence, poem one (section orthros), “in the breath of the tree,” places the human being in some sort of surrealist convergence with nature. Except for the onomatopoeic “creaks,” the poem remains on a chord of silence even when there is motion and variety in the creatures described. This probably intentional detail aids, however, in the resulting scene and atmosphere carved by the poet and finds corroboration in the quasi-echo produced by “bone stretched.” Can we not hear the bones snap as they are stretched? The poet is wishful. The poet wants to vanish; nonetheless, his desire is related to the idea of not being a nuisance in nature, to the aspiration of letting others enjoy what he is presently reveling in. Essentiality is a key word in the poem’s symbolism. Christou recognizes and defends the place and role of phenomena and things in the world. Winter is cold, it freezes; but it gives way to a beautiful season, spring.
